A human trafficker named Matthew Bassey was detained by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos. He had enlisted an orphan named Gift Eno for the purpose of trafficking drugs.
Bassey, a native of Akwa Ibom State's Oron Local Government Area, was detained when Eno was stopped in the airport of Lagos' departures area.
This was said in a statement released on Sunday and signed by Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA's director of media advocacy.
"Bassey, 29, from Oron LGA, Akwa Ibom state, was arrested on Wednesday, July 6, following the interception of Eno at the Lagos airport's departure hall," the statement said in part.
"Fifty packages of cannabis weighing 2.80 kilograms were found hidden in food items when Enos' luggage was checked, and there were inconsistencies between the age she claimed and the date of birth on her international passport.
Further questioning indicates that Mathew Bassey, the human trafficker who lured the woman to the airport and brought her there, was still waiting for her to leave. He was quickly located and taken into custody.
Investigations revealed that the victim, who is from the same Oron LGA in Akwa Ibom State as Bassey, just lost her mother, which made it simple for Bassey to entice her with the promise of getting her a job in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
It was also found that the recruiter had abused the victim's gullibility by placing drugs in her backpack to be sent to a contact he had in Dubai.
