The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) agents detained no fewer than 793 people in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) last year.
On Tuesday, during a grassroots campaign to raise awareness of the risks of illicit drugs, Kabir Tsakuwa, the Commander of the NDLEA in the Federal Capital Territory, spoke to reporters. He also stated that the NDLEA had confiscated 13,125kg of illicit drugs in the nation's capital.
Dr. Ngozi Madubuike, Director of Drug Demand Reduction at NDLEA, led the sensitization.
He said that 13,125kg of various drugs were seized in the previous year, with 12,660.3kg of cannabis sativa making up the majority of that total.
He listed a few more: 21.957kg of cocaine, 0.008kg of heroin, and 443.693kg of various psychoactive drugs.
At the same time frame, 78 individuals with drug use problems—74 men and 4 women—were successfully counseled and rehabbed.
"Our counseling and rehabilitation programs also produced favorable results in the territory," he said. In the meantime, 793 suspects—768 men and 29 women—were detained during the same time period, and 167 convictions—of which 161 are men and six women—were recorded.
