"A man amputates his neighbor's wrist following suspicions of a romantic connection with his spouse."

 

"Oro Umaru, a farmer residing in Ba'abete Fulani Camp within the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, appeared before a Kwara State Magistrates Court in Ilorin on Thursday, facing allegations of culpable homicide.

Umaru stands accused of severing the wrist of his close neighbor, Abubakar Sanda, who also resided in the Fulani Camp within the same local government area. The alleged motive behind this incident was suspicion of an extramarital affair between Sanda and Umaru's wife.

He has been formally charged with one count of attempted culpable homicide, as stipulated in section 299 of the penal code laws of Nigeria. The incident was initially reported to the authorities by Sanda Mohammed, the victim's brother."

"On the evening of September 8, 2023, at 8:30 PM, an individual named Sanda Mohammed, residing at Ba'abete Fulani Camp near Kaiama, lodged a formal complaint at the Kaiama Police Station. According to his report, earlier that day at approximately 12:00 PM, his younger brother, Abubakar Sanda, also residing at the same location, was returning from the Kaiama Kara market to their residence. During this journey, Abubakar Sanda was confronted and attacked with a machete by Oro Umaru, another resident of the same area. This violent encounter resulted in the complete severance of Abubakar Sanda's right wrist from his hand."

"Swift police intervention resulted in the apprehension of Oro Umaru. Following a discreet inquiry conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department, Oro Umaru admitted that he and Abubakar Sanda resided in close proximity to each other. He disclosed that in the year 2022, he harbored suspicions of an intimate relationship between Abubakar Sanda and his wife, Fatima Oro. Oro Umaru claimed that he had encountered them together on multiple occasions and had reported these incidents to his father, Alhaji Hamadu, but no action had been taken.

He went on to confess that on September 6, 2023, at approximately 10:00 PM, he caught Abubakar Sanda in conversation with his wife, Fatima. Upon spotting Oro Umaru approaching, Abubakar Sanda fled the scene."

"You, Oro Umaru, additionally admitted to assaulting Abubakar Sanda in his residence on September 8, 2023. During this altercation, you attacked him with a machete, resulting in the severe severance of his right wrist and a laceration on his forehead," stated the charge sheet.

The accused person did not enter a plea in court. Instead, the police prosecutor, Gbenga Ayeni, requested that the court detain the suspect in the Federal Correctional Facility while the investigation into the matter continued.

In her decision, the trial magistrate, Gbadeyan Kamson, ordered the detention of the suspect and scheduled the case for a hearing on October 11, 2023.
