Reportedly, Sanni Hameedat, a 20-year-old student at the University of Ilorin, tragically took her own life due to a N500,000 loan from an online lending platform that remained unpaid.
An anonymous source, speaking to Vanguard on Wednesday, confirmed Hameedat's passing at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).
The unfortunate incident involved the deceased consuming Sniper before the hostel porters summoned an ambulance to urgently transport her to the hospital.
The source revealed that the tragic cause of her demise was closely linked to the relentless pressure exerted by loan agents, who were demanding repayment after she defaulted on her loan.
"As I understand it, the deceased, Hameedat, was deeply distressed due to a financial predicament she faced. Her mother had entrusted her with a substantial sum of money, but she fell victim to a man she encountered on Snapchat, who claimed to urgently need N400,000 for his mother's purported breast cancer treatment. Hameedat, having N1 million that she held on her mother's behalf, decided to lend the money to her friend in the expectation that he would repay her.
However, when her mother required the money back, the individual abruptly severed all contact and blocked her. Overwhelmed by her predicament, Hameedat turned to loan apps to secure over N400,000, which she combined with her existing savings to amass the N500,000 she lent to her friend.
Ultimately, Hameedat found herself trapped in a debt cycle, struggling to repay the borrowed funds and grappling with financial hardship. The last time we saw her, it was around 11:00 p.m. the previous night, and she mentioned she was going shopping. Unfortunately, we later discovered that she had ingested Sniper at around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Her roommate, who had retired to bed early (name withheld), awoke in the middle of the night to find her in distress, vomiting, and foaming at the mouth."

In response to the tragic incident, the University of Ilorin's management has initiated an investigation. Mr. Kunle Akogun, the institution's Director of Information, conveyed this information to Vanguard, highlighting that the university has been made aware of the reports circulating on various social media platforms. He emphasized that the university has already launched an investigation into the matter and will provide the public with further details in due course.
