On Tuesday, an Upper Area Court in New Karu, Nasarawa State, arraigned Akonede Adekunle, a 25-year-old electrician, on charges of assaulting his girlfriend over allegations of infidelity. The defendant, who lives in One Man Village, Nasarawa State, faced four charges of criminal force, assault, causing grievous harm, and intimidation. However, Adekunle pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Christian Michael, the victim, Miss Endurance Abah, reported the incident at the New Nyanya police station, New Karu, Nasarawa State on May 4th. Michael stated that the complainant, who was in a romantic relationship with the defendant, accused him of infidelity, leading to a heated argument. Adekunle reportedly assaulted her and caused an injury on her forehead. He also threatened to use a cutlass on anyone who intervened.
The prosecutor noted that the defendant's actions contravene sections 265, 264, and 245 of the Penal Code.
The judge, Evelyn Otusha, granted the defendant bail in the sum of 100,000 with one surety in a similar amount. The surety must be a level three civil servant, reside within the court's jurisdiction, and provide proof of employment. The case was adjourned until May 31 for a hearing.
